“This experience… opens a lot of doorways, ‘cause I didn’t really think I could write as well.  Then I look at this and it’s like, Wow.”

Antonia Rodriguez,  Constitution High School, 9th grade

Each year, InterAct Theatre Company joins forces with Philadelphia Young Playwrights to produce the Young Voices Monologue Festival, a competitive program that invites high school students from all over the Philadelphia area to write and submit monologues that address issues important to students today. The top monologues are selected to be developed by professional directors, dramaturgs, and actors, and then presented in a series of showcase performances.

RIGHT NOW, YOU CAN DOUBLE YOUR GIFT AND SUPPORT YOUNG VOICES!

In June, InterAct was thrilled to receive a matching challenge grant of $20,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, in partnership with Philadelphia Young Playwrights for an expansion to our annual Young Voices Monologue Festival.

WHAT IS THE YOUNG VOICES MONOLOGUE FESTIVAL?

Young Voices is InterAct’s annual collaborative monologue-writing competition and production with Philly Young Playwrights.  We send teaching artists into high schools throughout the region to conduct monologue-writing workshops. From hundreds of submissions, we select 15 – 20 original student-written monologues to be produced as part of a showcase and performed by  professional actors for 7 performances on the Sky Box stage at The Adrienne. This $20,000 Knight Challenge Grant will support an expansion to this amazing program.

WHAT WILL THE EXPANSION LOOK LIKE? worstdayever04

–The number of participating high schools will go from 8 to 16

–We will launch a Young Voices “Best Of” High School Tour in fall ‘13 and spring ‘14

–We will double the performance run and more than double the number of attendees

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Because the Knight Challenge Grant is a matching opportunity, in order to receive the full funding, we must MATCH the funding.  When you give $25, $50, $100 or more, your gift will be matched by Knight and your support will be doubled!
