  • LobstahLab launched its inaugural play development retreat on Mount Desert Island (MDI) in Maine in 2019.

  • The hope is to give playwrights focused time and a team of collaborators to really dig into their scripts, while also indulging in, and being inspired by the beauty and wonder of Acadia National Park.

“Working in a place away from our daily lives, in direct proximity to nature, with trusted collaborators, purposeful communal ventures/activities, group meals...is a luxury not often afforded in the world of theatre.”
— Preston Choi, playwright (PERFORMING CLASS)

How Does It Work?

Learn how artists spend their week of intensive play development and outdoor enjoyment at LobstahLab.

  • Artist will participate in 20 hours of table work and rehearsal with a director, dramaturg and actors.

  • InterAct coordinates group outings to explore Acadia’s spectacular sites by way of swimming, hiking, and taking in local cuisine.

  • Artists stay in houses on what is called the “Quiet Side” of MDI. InterAct assembles teams and coordinates everyone’s transportation to and from Maine.

LobstahLab has been supported by The Lida Foundation, NNPN Collaboration Fund, NNPN Bridge Program, and The William Penn Foundation.
